共生

「原点に帰る」とか「共生」といったことが意識されたオバマ大統領の就任演説でした。

                  

【経済について】

Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some....

（一部の人たちの強欲と無責任の結果、我々の経済はひどく弱体化してしまった）

Its power to generate wealth and expand freedom is unmatched, but this crisis has reminded us that without a watchful eye, the market can spin out of control - and that a nation cannot prosper long when it favors only the prosperous.

（富を創り自由を広げるという点で、マーケット（市場）の力に比肩するものはない。

しかし一方で、今日の危機は、市場をきちんと監視しなければ市場は制御不能になってしまうことを我々に気づかせた。

と同時に豊かなものばかりを優遇する国は長く繁栄することが出来ないことを我々に気づかせた。）

The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works-

（我々が今日問うのは我々の政府の大小ではなく政府が機能するか否かだ。）

And to those nations like ours that enjoy relative plenty, we say we can no longer afford indifferece to suffering outside our borders;

（我々と同じように比較的豊かな国々に対して。彼らに対して我々は言おう。我々の国境の向こう側の人たちが苦しんでいることに対して我々はもはや無関心ではいられない。このことを言おう。）

【原点について】

...we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned.

（我々の国の偉大さは与えられたものではない。それは勝ち取らなければならないものだ。）

...it is ultimately the faith and determination of the American people upon which this nation relies. It is the kindness to take in a stranger when levees break, the selflessness of workers who would rather cut their hours than see a friend lose their job... It is the firefighter's courage to storm a stairway filled with smoke, but also a parent's willingness to nurture a child, that finally decides our fate.

（結局のところ、この国がよって立つのは、アメリカの人々の信念と決意である。それは堤防が決壊したとき見知らぬ人をも助ける親切心であり、友人が職を失うのを傍観するよりも自らの労働時間が削られるのを選ぶ無私の心だ。

我々の運命を最終的に決定付けるのは、煙に覆われた階段を突進する消防士の勇気であり、いとわずに子供を育てる親の気持ちだ。）
