宝くじのコードに挑戦した男

映画『ソーシャルネットワーク』を見た方はお分かりだと思うのですが、コードという言葉がたくさん出てきます。

コンピューターのプログラムのことです（『こちら』）。

ところで宝くじのコードはどうなっているのか。

本当にランダム・ナンバーが使われているのか。

「いや、そうではないはずだ」

こう思ってその解読に挑戦した人（スタンフォード大学のエンジニアリング大学院卒業者）の話です。

One day, Mohan Srivastava, MS '88, found a couple of old tic-tac-toe lottery tickets on his desk, scratched them off--and realized there had to be a trick to this: "The lottery corporation needs to control the number of winning tickets. The game can't be truly random. Instead, it has to generate the illusion of randomness while actually being carefully determined." Srivastava cracked the code--and for his next trick, had to get the Ontario Lottery to pay attention to the problem.
